A new, fast-acting heartburn medication has just been released, a heartburn treatment known as Nexium Control has been released by the makers of AstraZeneca.
Nexium Control is the latest addition to the new Prilosec, which had been a tried-and-true treatment for gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), heartburn, and esophageal ulcers.
Esomeprazole and Omeprazole have been used for GERD since 2002, but it has been associated with the dangerous and potentially life-threatening side effect of stomach bleeding. Nexium Control is the latest addition to Prilosec.
A new study by the University of North Carolina and Duke University School of Pharmacy shows that a new drug with a lower risk of bleeding than Nexium Control could work for people at risk.
The study, which was presented at the American Heart Association Scientific Sessions in October 2022, involved 22 people who had been given a combination of Prilosec and Nexium Control in the United States to help them manage heartburn in the first four weeks of treatment. It is the first drug with a lower risk of stomach bleeding, according to the study.
Dr. Paul D'Onofrio, an associate professor of medicine at the Duke University School of Pharmacy, said that he and his colleagues had been trying to figure out how long Prilosec and Nexium Control have been effective, and what side effects they would have if the drugs were used.
"It was really exciting," he said.
Prilosec is the brand name for Prilosec tablets, which are taken once a day. Nexium Control is the brand name for the drug naproxen sodium.
Prilosec and Nexium Control are both used to treat stomach problems, and Prilosec is used to treat heartburn.
Michael J. Schmitt, a gastroenterologist at Northwestern Memorial Hospital and a member of the American College of Gastroenterology's Gastrointestinal Advisory Panel, said that the new drug would be more affordable.
"It will be more convenient," he said.
The new drug is also being manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline, a British company that makes Nexium. It is one of many medicines that are being tested for serious side effects, including stomach bleeding.
For the study, Schmitt and his colleagues had been trying to determine how long Prilosec and Nexium Control were effective, and what side effects they would have if they were used.
Schmitt was a professor of gastroenterology at New York University School of Medicine, who was also involved in the study.
He said that he was pleased with the results of the trial, which showed that Prilosec and Nexium Control worked better than either drug alone.
He said that his group of researchers had used the results of the study to help other doctors, and that it was important to have a consistent trial of both drugs.
"If you have a patient who has had stomach problems for some time, you should have a plan in place that includes the right drugs," he said.
The researchers also did a test with omeprazole, a drug that is known to be associated with heartburn.
"We found that omeprazole had a better safety profile in the first four weeks of treatment than Prilosec," said Dr. David G. R. Bresch, an allergiologist at the University of California, San Francisco, who was not involved in the study. "This is the first time that a drug has been tested for heartburn, and that would have been really exciting."
The trial was stopped in September 2022, and the drug has now been discontinued.
"It was a great surprise," said Schmitt, who has written an editorial about the new drug.
"We had been trying to find a way to keep this drug off the market," he added.
Schmitt and his colleagues then looked into the drug for a trial to be published next month.
Schmitt and his colleagues tested a combination of omeprazole and diclofenac, a prescription medicine used to treat stomach problems. In doing so, they found that both drugs reduced the risk of stomach bleeding, and that Prilosec was associated with bleeding.
