But AstraZeneca, the drug maker, is struggling to keep its patent-protected monopoly on the drug.
“We’ve seen a lot of consolidation going on at AstraZeneca,” said Les Funtleyder, an AstraZeneca analyst. “I think it’s going to be difficult for patients and their families to get affordable care and continue to use the drugs.”
That consolidation is just one symptom of the drug’s patent expiration, Funtleyder said. The other symptom is the loss of the drug’s exclusive patent. If AstraZeneca were to break away from the new drug and start selling its own generic version of the drug, that would be the last thing Funtleyder wants.
Funtleyder said the biggest problem with generics is that they contain much less of the drug than the original drug — and that’s why they cost more.
“There’s a lot of consolidation going on,” Funtleyder said. “The only way to keep the benefits that you’re getting is to keep the patent on the original drug.”
Funtleyder said that’s because the drugmaker is struggling to keep the patent on the brand-name drug, and that’s why it’s difficult to compete with generic versions.
For example, some drugmakers like Novartis are still struggling to make generic versions of their brand-name drugs. Funtleyder said that’s a reason that AstraZeneca is struggling to keep its patent on Nexium. The other reason that AstraZeneca has trouble, Funtleyder said, is that it’s a huge discount program for drugmakers that are struggling to get a drug like Nexium.
“We have to be very clear that the company is going to make a profit on the drug,” Funtleyder said. “We have to be very clear that it’s going to pay for Nexium.”
AstraZeneca, which makes AstraZeneca PPI, has been struggling with the generic competition for years. And that competition has been growing, Funtleyder said, because the generic versions are cheaper. And the companies have to make sure they’re making a profit.
“AstraZeneca is trying to compete on this by making a profit by selling a generic version of its drug that’s been on the market for three years,” Funtleyder said. “But they’re going to make a profit.”
So far, AstraZeneca has been able to keep the patent on Nexium, which is protected by a three-year exclusivity period. But Funtleyder said that’s because the patent on Nexium is only valid for 180 days, which means the generic versions of the drug have to be sold for between $10 and $60 per tablet, depending on the pharmacy. And that’s the price Funtleyder said the generics cost them.
Funtleyder said that could mean AstraZeneca could be forced to pay for Nexium. And that could be because the company is paying a copayment, Funtleyder said. And that’s why some drugmakers have gotten stuck on the generic version.
“We’ve seen a lot of consolidation going on at AstraZeneca, and I think it’s going to be difficult for patients and their families to get affordable care and continue to use the drugs,” Funtleyder said. “There’s a lot of consolidation going on at AstraZeneca.”
If AstraZeneca is able to keep its patent on Nexium, Funtleyder said, the generic competition will likely be over. The generic version of the drug, for example, is available by its very nature. It’s also much more expensive than its original drug, and the generics are less expensive than the original drug.
